National conflicts and revolutionary endeavors in the heart of Europe: Fiume-Rijeka 1918-1924
A lecture by Emiliano Loria PhD - Curator of the Archive of the Society of Fiuman Studies, Archive-Historical Museum of Fiume in Rome and collaborator of the Rijeka Office of the Foundation "Il Vittoriale degli italiani".
The talk will focus on the situation in Fiume from the moment the First World War ended until the birth and rapid fall of the Free State of Fiume. In particular, I will talk about the birth of the Italian National Council (1918), which administered the city until the proclamation of the Regency of Carnaro (1920), provided with a very innovative constitutional text composed by Alceste De Ambris and Gabriele d’Annunzio, which is still debated today. The expulsion of d'Annunzio and many legionaries from the city of Fiume (January 1921) left a deep economic and political destabilization that contributed to the collapse of the Free State of Fiume governed by Riccardo Zanella (March 1922). The annexation of the city to the Kingdom of Italy (January 1924) stabilized the situation but coincided with the emergence of the more violent and dictatorial face of Fascism.

The end of a world is the second one in the series of lectures, part of the Fiume Crisis project, talking about the history of Rijeka/Fiume as an independent city state following the First World War and the historical events leading up to it.

The event will take place online, on Zoom.
Registration is required to attend the event.

Fiume Crisis is an educational larp (live-action roleplaying) project ran by three NGOs from three EU countries, Parallel Worlds from Hungary, Terrible Creations from Croatia and Altera Cultura in association with Terre Spezzate from Italy.
The project focuses on creating live-action roleplaying tools, scenarios that use the context of this vibrant and chaotic era to reflect upon our present and to educate about issues of political radicalization, populist rhetorics and propaganda.
